Barton Allan Ballou (1835–1922) was the founder of the jewelry concern B A Ballou & Co, which he headed for more than 50 years. Based in Providence and headquartered at 61 Peck Street in New York City, the concern had offices at 13 Maiden Lane in Chicago, 29 East Madison Street, and 704 Market Street in San Francisco.

Barton Ballou was a descendant in the sixth generation of Maturin Ballou, an immigrant who came to America from Devonshire, England, before 1645. Born in Cumberland, Rhode Island, October 25, 1835, Barton received his education in the country schools of Cumberland until he was nine years old, when his father died.

The history of the New York City jewelry company Harry S Bick & Son dates back to 1923, when it was called Kramer & Bick. Its founders were Samuel Kramer (1864 – 1949) and his son-in-law Harry Stark Bick (1890 – 1975).

Samuel Kramer’s daughter, Hattie B Kramer, married Harry Bick in 1913. They had a daughter, Bertha, in 1916, and a son, Harry S Bick Jr., in 1918.

In October 2024, one of the oldest jewellery companies, Juergens & Andersen, celebrated its 170th anniversary. More than ten generations of jewellers make up the history of the Juergens family. The chain was started by Paul Juergens’ great-great-grandfather, who was born in 1700 and ran a jewellery shop in Norway.

His descendants, gold and silversmiths Paul August Juergens and his son, Paul, 18, came to New York from Oldenburg, Denmark, in 1850. Four years later, Frederick William Juergens, their dad and grandad, with the rest of the Juergens family moved to Chicago.

The Lance Corporation which owned Hudson Pewter jewelry trademark was incorporated in August 1964 in Hudson, Massachusetts. The founder and president of the Lance Corporation was a native of Massachusetts, Everett Raymond Kennedy (1928 – 2014), also known as Ray Kennedy.

In fact, Hudson Pewter was the first of several trademarks registered by the Lance Corporation. Other jewelry trademarks founded by the Lance Corporation included Offcanvas (1991-1998), Frolicking Friends (1985 – 1992), TLC (1981 – 2002), Hudson (1980 – 2001), and Hudson Pewter (1975 – 2000).

Before founding his jewelry company Ultracraft in 1970, Luigi B. Guadango (1936 – 2002) already had more than a decade of experience in the jewelry business as a model maker. Initially, Ultracraft was a small factory producing costume jewelry and gift items, employing about 20 people.

By 1972, Ultracraft Co Inc., 13 Industrial Lane Johnston, Rhode Island, had become a multi-million dollar corporation. The company’s president, Luigi Guadango, was an Italian who had graduated from the University of Naples and who became perhaps the youngest mayor of his hometown, Alife, in the province of Caserta.

Recognizable all over the world and today highly collectible, Amita Damascene Co made jewelry with traditional Japanese motifs in the Damascene technique.

As the name suggests, Damascus techniques originated from Damascus. However, Japanese craftsmen have been producing items in this technique for centuries. Notably, Kyoto became the center of production of items in the Damascus ceramic style.

James Duncan Leys (1871 – 1962) and Alex S. Christie (1870 – 1895) founded the jewelry firm of Leys, Christie & Co, 65 Nassau Street, New York, in 1887. Noteworthy, run by a third-generation jewelers the family owned business is still active.

James Duncan Leys came to the United States in 1886, and his first jobs were in El Dorado, Kansas, and Keokuk, Iowa. He later moved to Butte, Montana, where he started a retail jewelry business. His brother, A.S. Christie joined him. They both became U.S. citizens in 1889 in Silverbow County, Montana.
