Gontie Costume Jewelry Trademark History

The French costume jewelry brand Gontie is not just high-quality jewelry with a nearly 80-year history; it is a family tradition that dates back to the late 19th century.
According to France Major Manufacturers Directory, Jean Gonthiez (1933 – 2013) and Frederick Gonthiez founded Gonthiez Freres, S.A., on July 3, 1957. Noteworthy, the Gonthiez were the successors of a family business established by Esaïe Gonthiez (1858 – 1931) in 1890.

Originally located at 6 rue Croix St. Firmin, AmiensLater, the firm moved to Allee de L’Industrie, Corbie, northern France. Gonthiez Frères manufactured silverware, costume jewelry and novelties. Initially, the company employed about 100 people, and later the staff increased to 200 people.

Gonthiez Frères launched Gontie jewelry trademark in 1958. In February 1979 Gonthiez Frères established its branch at 630 Fifth Ave in New York. The branch ceased to exist in 1995.
Gonthiez Frères produced both high-end jewelry made from precious metals and stones, as well as costume jewelry made from cast brass, bronze, and pewter.
The earliest marking traditionally includes the word “Gontie” and a letter G on a round cartouche. Since 1989 the mark has changed to a stylized logo “Gontie” on an oval cartouche. Also, each piece has a product number.

The company created exquisite jewelry in collaboration with designers from French fashion houses. Over its more than 130-year history, the family business has experienced ups and downs, expansions and suspensions. Now in its fourth and fifth generation, jewelers continue the legacy begun in the late 19th century.
