Bliss Brothers Jewelry Company History

Incorporated under Rhode Island law with $60,000 capital the Bliss Brothers & Everett jewelry manufacturing firm started in 1873. Its founders were Charles Edwin Bliss (8 February 1837 – 1 April 1908), Everett Bradford Bliss (31 October 1839 – 2 August 1906), and Richard Louis Ferdinand Everett (26 Nov 1833 – 1894). Initially located in the Steam Power building Railroad St., their plant made a variety of gold-plated goods.
Three years later the Bliss Brothers & Everett moved into the Robinson building, and opened a New York office with Mr Everett there. In 1887 Everett withdrew and the company changed name to Bliss Brothers Co. Following the retirement of Everett Bliss in the early 1890s, and Charles Edwin Bliss took over the company.

Bliss Bros employed over 100 workers who made high quality lockets, gold plated charms, rings, pendants, compacts, pill boxes, and other small items.

After 27 years at the head of one of the Attleboro’s leading manufacturing houses, Charles E. Bliss of Bliss Bros retired in 1901. His son Herbert Charles Bliss (3 Apr 1867 – ) and Ernest M. Bliss (6 August 1871 – 10 September 1913) ran the business hereafter. Herbert Bliss was also Director of Providence Jewelers’ Board of Trade, Rhode Island.

An unpleasant event was the company’s transition to external management in 1912, due to its insolvency. In addition, during the subsequent legal proceedings, Ernest Bliss died (September 10, 1913), at the age of 42. It is unknown how long his elder brother Herbert Bliss lived, but he was no longer in charge of the company.
