Staret Costume Jewelry Brand History

The history of the Staret jewelry brand, which manufactured clips, pins, bracelets, and buckles made with precious metals, began in September 1940. However, according to the Official Gazette of the US Patent and Trademark Office, Star Novelty Co had been using this trademark since December 1, 1935, the company’s founding date.
In 1941, Star Novelty Co changed its name to Staret Jewelry Company, 322 South Franklin Street, Chicago. It’s likely that the company’s name change occurred not only due to the popularity of the Staret brand, but also to avoid confusion.

Star Novelty Co of Providence
In fact, a company with the same name and at the same time, Star Novelty Co, existed in Providence. The Providence based company had no relation to the Staret brand, which belonged to the Star Novelty Jewelry Company of Chicago.
The president of Star Novelty Co, manufacturing jewelers, 80 Clifford St, Providence, was Joseph Pezzullo (aka Joseph Pazullo), who owned the firm in 1934. In October 1934 Star Novelty Co was incorporated to manufacture jewelry with an authorized capital of $7,000 common stock. The incorporators were: Joseph Pazullo and Michael Pazullo, of Johnston and Pasquale J. Valerio of Cranston.

Staret trademark
According to advertisements for Staret jewelry in Vogue magazine in 1940 and 1941, the jewelry was sold in the best stores in the United States. Staret jewelry showcased high craftsmanship, the use of the finest materials, and exquisite design.

Some art historians compare Staret jewelry to that of Eisenberg, Schrager, Rice Weiner, Trifari, and other renowned designers. However, there is no reliable confirmation of this, although many famous jewelers of the 1940s worked in similar styles, from classical to Art Deco, and using similar materials.

MJSA Show for Wholesale Jewelers
The last mention of Star Novelty Co was in 1954. Thus, in April 1954 Star Novelty Co was one of the 250 jewelry firms exhibiting at MJSA Show for Wholesale Jewelers. MJSA – the semi-annual show sponsored by the Manufacturing Jewelers Sales Association.
